PRESS RELEASE

It’s been a long time coming, but Common Ground finally has released its first CD project titled “One For The Road”. Band members pulled a three-day marathon recording session at Michael Cleveland’s home studio. On average, they recorded 12 straight hours each day to come up with the 14 tracks that are listed above.
Louisville, Kentucky’s own Steve Cooley handled the technical engineering work. Steve is currently the banjoist for the Louisville based bluegrass string band, Hog Operation, and he is also a fantastic sound recording engineer. If you are looking for someone to engineer a project, Steve’s the man to get. Guitarist of the group, Ronnie Deaton said, “We got some of the best takes that I ever thought could be possible. This guy can pull sound out of the air. There’s no down time either. When we started working, we pretty much didn’t stop until the project was finished. Everything was done digitally on computer, and he knows how to use it to it’s maximum potential. We’ve nick named him “The Manipulator” for his ability to manipulate even the smallest note or sound.”. His background includes not only being a banjo player, but a guitarist, vocalist and a three-time Grammy nominated recording artist and producer/engineer. He has performed with artists as diverse as Bill Monroe (the Father of Bluegrass), Doc Watson, and David Grisman, folk legends Jean Ritchie and Hazel Dickens, to the current Hoarde Festival favorites Phish. He's been a long-time performer with the Dillard’s as well.
The project was also directed and produced by Rounder recording artist and world class, 4 time, IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association), fiddler of the year, Michael Cleveland. Mandolinist of the group, Dennis Schubnell, said “We asked Michael to do it just as he would do his own. He called all the shots, from deciding to use Steve for the engineering work, to recording the project in his own home studio. Michael has an incredible ear for pitch. He can pick out little imperfections better than anyone that I’ve seen in my life. Did I mention that he’s extremely patient too? He had to be with us!”.
. Instrumentally, the band played pretty much as they do on stage, recording all of the tracks at once, on separate mics located in various parts of the same room in the studio. Lastly, they went back and laid down the vocal tracks one at a time. Michael also helped out with some fantastic fiddle work on many of the tracks, and some incredible second guitar backup on some others.
When creating this project, our goal was to achieve a melting pot of all our musical experiences combined. We wanted the track selections to represent styles from one extreme to the other and everything in between. We think that we’ve accomplished just that. From the traditional tones of the Flatt & Scruggs twin guitar style spiritual, (Who Will Sing For Me), those bluegrass classics that have become standards throughout the years, (Long Black Vail), to the progressive bluegrass styles of The Osborne Brothers, (Listening To The Rain), and The Seldom Scene, (California Cotton Fields). We even covered a little bit of philosophical rock from Paul Simon, (Leaves That Are Green Turned To Brown), and some hard driving gospel, (When I Walk Up That Street Of Gold). Some of the tunes emphasized the old style acappella harmonies and stacks, (Cold Sheets Of Rain & West Virginia Girl). We tried to create a variety of bluegrass styles from hardships with lost loves, (Mary Anne), paying debts back to society after lessons learned, (Forty Years Of Trouble), to traditional songs of living life, (Tearing Pine Mountain Down & Just Like You). We didn’t forget the original stuff either. Dennis placed a couple of original tunes that he had written on here as well, (Silas Cain & One For The Road).
We would like to thank Steve and Michael for some incredible work. Their attention to detail is just fantastic. Without their dedication and patience, this project would not have been possible.
With all the variety placed on this project, we hope you will find something that you will enjoy. To listen to the tracks, log onto our website at http://www.4commonground.com. Click on the MP3 Track link and enjoy. Thank you so much for your interest in Common Ground.
